This is a resource booklet for families published twice a year with inspiring stories and information on activities for children with disabilities in the Edmonton area.
This booklet is published semi-annually by the city of Edmonton providing information on activities for both adults and children with disabilities.
The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society is involved with several cycling initiatives in the Edmonton area supporting children with special needs and their famlies. More information on these cycling programs and resources can be found at www.youcanridetwo.ca.
YOU CAN RIDE TWO
You Can Ride Two is a free community program for children wishing to ride a regular two-wheeled bicycle. The program has been running for over 10 years and has either a 1:1 or a 2:1 volunteer to child ratio depending on the needs of each child. Chidlren must be at least 8 by the start date of the program (April 24, 2014). The course is geared for children aged 8-14, though we have had a couple of older children attend over the years. A referral from a school/community physiotherapist or occupational therapist is strongly recommended. Spots are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to register, please contact John Collier at 780-433-1270. Based on the research done this summer with teaching children with Down Syndrome and/or moderate cognitive delays, we may be changing how we provide intervention to this population.
YOU CAN RIDE TOO
You Can Ride Too (formerly You Can Bike Too) is a partnership between several organizations in the Edmonton area with the goal of creating an adapted bicycle loan pool. Families pay a $100 refundable deposit to borrow one of the 50+ adapted bicycles available in our loan pool. Loans are available for a period of 1 week to 5 months and bikes range from toddler tricycles to adult size trikes. Various supports and adaptations (back supports, adapted pedals, continuous drive) are available. Bike rentals (October to April) may also be available to schools for a fee of $20/year + $100 refundable deposit. Children MUST be referred to the program by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist and families must be available for the bike-fitting event (date to be determined).
